All facts at a glance

The general integration course consists of two parts, the language course (600 teaching units) and the orientation course (100 teaching units). In the language course you will learn the vocabulary you need to speak and write in everyday life. This includes contacts with authorities, conversations with neighbors and at work, writing letters and filling out forms. The orientation course informs you about life in Germany. Here you will learn about the country's legal system, culture and recent history. The first 300 teaching units are called the basic course, the following 300 teaching units are called the advanced language course.

Requirements for participation

In order to be able to take part in an integration course and be admitted, certain requirements must be met. It depends on when you acquired your residence permit, where you come from and whether you were obliged by an authority.

Foreigners with a residence permit are entitled to participate in an integration course if they have permanent residence in Germany, have humanitarian reasons or are loud §38a Residence Act have a long-term residence permit. Furthermore, people are entitled if they reside permanently in Germany with a first settlement according to §23 Abs.1 AufenthG. You are only obliged to participate if an authorized body prescribes the course for you.

German nationals have no legal entitlement to an integration course. However, if there is not enough knowledge, the person is classified as particularly in need of integration and there are still places available, the BAMF can grant admission.

EU citizens also have no legal right to participate. Here, too, in cases of insufficient knowledge or an urgent need for integration, approval can be granted by the BAMF.

Process of the integration courses

An integration course for the integration of foreigners and migrants in Germany includes two major areas. On the one hand it is important that the language is learned, but on the other hand knowledge about values, politics and history is also important.

The course itself starts with a placement test. Above all, the language level is tested here to check how much knowledge of the German language you already have so that you can start at an appropriate level. The course consists of 700 teaching units (UE), divided into a language course and an orientation course. It takes up most of the time language course with 600 UE, in some cases also 900 UE. Communication and vocabulary for everyday situations such as work, profession and social issues are taught. the Orientation course is 100 units, where you will learn important things about life in Germany. This includes aspects such as rights, values ​​and culture.

Basically, integration courses take place on a full-time basis. In exceptional cases, such as for people who are employed, a part-time course can also take place in the afternoon or evening. In addition, an intensive course can be completed under certain conditions. This includes 400 units for the language course and 30 units for the orientation course. An integration course usually concludes with a language test and a "Living in Germany" test.

The language course of an integration course must be completed if the language skills required for everyday communication are not yet sufficient. In the usually 600 unit course, vocabulary as well as communication, reading and writing are taught. Subject areas are profession and work, education and care, social life, the media and health. In addition, you will learn how to write letters, e-mails and applications and how to fill out forms. The aim of the language course is to make communication possible without the help of a third person. This course concludes with a test of the language level achieved.

Since areas such as values ​​and norms differ from country to country, it is also important to learn what life is like in Germany. The German legal system, German history and culture as well as general rights and obligations are dealt with here. In addition, it is taught how living together in Germany takes place. The conclusion of this course is the test "Living in Germany".

Special Courses

In addition to the general integration course, special courses are also offered. The integration course with Literacy is intended for those who cannot read or write yet. 960 UE are planned for this. The course takes place in small groups, which makes for a productive learning environment. In addition, the students are taught how they can achieve further learning successes independently after the course.

For people who can already read and write, but not yet mastered the Latin alphabet, a course for duplicate learners offered. Reading and writing in the Latin script is taught here, which includes up to 1000 UE (900 UE language course and 100 UE orientation course).

In an integration course for Women specially tailored topics are dealt with. The course, which comprises a total of 1000 teaching units, deals with a wide range of topics relating to everyday life, raising children and the education of children. In addition, women have the opportunity to get to know their children's kindergartens and schools. In a lesson from woman to woman, the topic of the difference in the life of women in Germany and the home country is also explained.

Similar topics are covered in the course designed specifically for Parents addressed. Also with up to 1000 teaching units, schools, kindergartens, educators and teachers are getting to know each other and social contacts are made with other parents.

Also specially for teenagers an integration course is offered. With up to 1000 teaching units, the focus is on topics for the future. Aspects of the course are school, training and work. Topics such as family, health and culture are also important points. In order to make the course even more interesting, current topics are dealt with. A big advantage is the direct contact to educational institutions, jobs and advice centers, which can lay the foundation for the future during the practical phase.

remedial courses are offered to people who have been living in Germany for a long time but were still able to learn the language properly. The language is learned in 900 units, and the most important things about politics, culture, history and values ​​in another 100 units.

In exceptional cases there is also a crash course possible. This is divided into 400 language units and 30 orientation units. Here, too, the aim is to master everyday life independently.

final exam

It doesn't matter which integration course you take - the aim is to be able to act independently in everyday life. The final exam consists of a language test and the "Living in Germany" (LiD) test. A "Integration course certificate“ is issued if you have successfully participated in the LiD and a language course with the result B1. The language test "Deutschtest für Zuwanderer" (DTZ) can also be completed with level A2, but the test would not have been passed. target of “German Tests for Immigrants” is the achievement of language level B1. The written part, which lasts 100 minutes, includes a reading and listening test and writing a short letter. This is followed by the 15-minute oral test, in which you first introduce yourself and then show your ability to communicate with a second person and the examiners.

The test "Live in Germany" then includes the subject areas that were dealt with in the orientation course. Questions are asked about history, the legal system and life in Germany. With a questionnaire of 33 questions and four possible answers each, at least 60 questions must be answered correctly within 15 minutes. With help of a questionnaire and sample questionnaire, which contain exemplary possible questions for the LiD test, can be learned in advance for the exam.

Rights & Obligations of Participants
