Retraining is a form of professional development that is aimed specifically at people who can no longer practice their learned/previous job and therefore have to reorient themselves. In this way, they get the chance to acquire a new professional qualification and get a fresh start in their careers. Retraining is intended to maintain or improve professional flexibility and mobility. Therefore, the participants learn theoretical and practical knowledge in the course of the measure in order to be well prepared for the exercise of the new job. Since a state-recognized qualification can be obtained at the end of a retraining course, certain content-related framework conditions must be met. For this reason, retraining may only be offered by educational institutions that have previously been checked by the relevant Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and found to be qualified.

What is a retrainee?

As a retrainee, you are a graduate of further vocational training – retraining. Through this educational path, you acquire a professional qualification that is equivalent to an apprenticeship, but in a shorter period of time.
It is important to distinguish between operational and external Retrainees: In-house retrainees are employees, while off-the-job retrainees are not. You are considered a student. This is important, for example, in the context of holiday regulations or collective bargaining agreements.

Difference between retraining and apprenticeship: What these two forms of education have in common is that after a successful final examination, a recognized professional qualification can be obtained. However, the forms of education are aimed at target groups. Apprenticeships are primarily intended for young people who have little or no practical experience and would like to learn a trade for the first time. In order to enable the trainees to start their careers successfully, an extensive dual training course lasting at least three years is planned. Completed vocational training or at least several years of professional experience is a prerequisite for participation in retraining. The training is also dual, but the training period for retraining is usually reduced to two years. Retraining is often referred to as "shortened training".

Difference between retraining and advanced training: Through further training, existing qualifications and skills are expanded or adapted to necessary, new professional requirements. In contrast to retraining, there is no professional reorientation here, but a strengthening and deepening of the current professional skills. Further training is not completed with a professional qualification, but with a recognized certificate. This document can be used to prove a new level of qualification for the current field of activity. In this way, one's own position in the company can be secured or improved.

Difference between retraining and further training: Although retraining is a form of further vocational training, not all further training is also retraining. The term “continuing education” encompasses many different vocational training measures. This also includes courses, training courses, seminars and training courses. These do not necessarily end with a recognized degree, but often with a certificate of participation. This serves as proof of the acquired additional technical qualification. Retraining can be divided into three types: the operational, the intercompany and the scholastic.

The operational retraining is, as the name suggests, carried out directly in a company. The retraining is similar to dual vocational training. Theoretical and practical knowledge are taught alternately. Sometimes even attending a vocational school is recommended. Although there is basically no compulsory school attendance, school attendance can be contractually stipulated by the company. From this point of view, retrainees learn under similar conditions as apprentices. The training is even remunerated. However, the earnings of the retrainees are higher than the salary of the apprentice.

In addition to the theoretical school education, one or more internships are also planned in order to test and deepen the theoretical knowledge in practice. However, the school retraining is not remunerated, but even costs. The vocational schools charge school fees for the instruction. However, this can be funded by certain cost bearers.

Inter-company retraining are offered by private educational institutions and can be divided into two parts: a theoretical and a practical learning phase. The theory lessons must be certified by the IHK and are taught and taught by the trained teachers of the educational institute. The operational learning phase takes the form of an internship. Some training providers even have their own training workshops or training companies where practical skills can be acquired. Although this form of retraining is also not remunerated, the retraining costs can be partially or fully funded with the help of suitable cost units.

However, this means that a certain financial outlay is also necessary: ​​Monthly retraining fees, health insurance contributions, travel costs from home to work and back, as well as learning materials, possibly even work clothes and of course the regular living expenses have to be paid. In some cases, the costs of external accommodation or childcare also have to be taken into account. Added together, the total costs average an amount in the mid-five-digit range.

The education voucher is a social benefit of the employment agency and the job center. It is used to enable unemployed people and job seekers who are willing to study to take part in educational measures so that they can reintegrate into the labor market. If necessary, the unemployment benefit will continue to be paid during the retraining period. In addition, the retrainees are socially secure, since the contributions to health, pension, nursing care and accident insurance are taken over by the employment agency or the job center.
