Funding for further training – What funding and financing options are there for further training for self-payers?

Bundeswehr Vocational Advancement Service

The Federal Armed Forces Career Advancement Service (BFD) promotes professional soldiers, temporary soldiers (SAZ) and those doing military service voluntarily (FWDL) after they have left active service. Educational leave

(for Berlin, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia, other federal states on request)

Educational leave is the statutory entitlement to further training for employees during working hours. The costs are shared between the employee (seminar fees) and the employer (continued payment of wages). The federal states of Bavaria and Saxony are excluded from educational leave. The duration of the possible educational leave (for full-time employment) varies between the federal states from 5 to 10 days per year.

Depending on the federal state, there are different deadlines for submitting the educational leave to your employer:

  • 4 weeks: Bremen, Lower Saxony
  • 6 weeks: Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Schleswig-Holstein
  • 8 weeks: Saarland, Thuringia

Funding from the federal states

The European Social Fund has made financial resources available to the federal states to promote job-related further training for employees. However, since education is a matter for the federal states, there is no nationwide uniform program.

  • in Nordrhein-Westfalen the “education check” measure, which covers up to €500 of the costs of further education – www.bildungsscheck.de

Saxon Development Bank (SAB)

With a course fee of €250 or more, the SAB-Bank supports anyone who starts their business, practice or employment in Saxony Has. The processing time takes about 8 weeks - so registering in good time is very important! Course registration is only possible once the application has been approved. Self-payers

Expenses for further education and training are deductible as income-related expenses. As a participant in further training, you can fully claim the fees as income-related expenses if you can prove that the qualification was professionally motivated.

 

Further training bonus Hamburg

With the Hamburg training bonus, training costs for employees who are subject to social security contributions and the self-employed are usually subsidized at 50%, in individual cases a subsidy of 100% is possible (max. €1.500 per person).

Further training bonus Schleswig-Holstein

The training bonus subsidizes seminar costs for professional training for employees, trainees, owners of small businesses and freelancers. The subsidy for the professional training measure from the European Social Fund covers 50% of the eligible seminar costs, but no more than €2.000 of the total measure. Further education DIRECT Saxony-Anhalt

Employees with an average monthly gross salary of less than €4.575 and unemployed people who are not entitled to benefits under SGB II or SGB III can be supported with FEDERBILDUNG DIREKT Sachsen-Anhalt. The subsidy depends on income and can cover up to 90% of the total costs. It should be noted that the grant must be applied for in writing and in a formal manner at least six calendar weeks before the planned registration for further training.

Promotion of further education in Lower Saxony

Employees from companies with a permanent establishment in Lower Saxony and business owners of companies in Lower Saxony with fewer than 50 employees are eligible for funding. The funding is aimed at individual further training measures. A subsidy of up to 50% with at least €1.000 is possible and has a term of 24 months.

Further training for low-skilled and employed older employees in companies (WeGebAU)

This funding is provided by the Federal Employment Agency. There are three options:

  1. Qualification of employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 250 employees: In this case, the course costs are partially reimbursed. They also receive a subsidy for the necessary other training costs (e.g. travel expenses). For employees who have not yet reached the age of 45, the company must bear at least 50% of the course costs.
  2. Qualification-related further training for low-skilled employees: People without a vocational qualification or with a vocational qualification are supported if they have been doing semi-skilled or unskilled work for at least four years and can no longer practice their learned profession.
  3. Degree-oriented vocational training: The target group corresponds to the second option. However, the funding conditions are more open.

Further Education Check Saxony

Further training check Thuringia

The further training check from the GFAW Thuringia promotes projects for the individual further training of employees subject to social security contributions who work in a Thuringian company. Continuing Education Grant

Further education scholarship for young graduates of vocational training

The further training grant supports young people who have successfully completed their vocational training in further professional qualifications. The scholarship supports specialist courses, for example to become a technician, master craftsman or business administrator, but also interdisciplinary further training, for example IT courses or intensive language courses.
