Conditions and intended use
If you would like to receive an education voucher to finance your further education, you must meet certain individual requirements. These are usually discussed in detail during a personal consultation at the employment agency or job center.
You will receive the education voucher when you register retrain or retrain, around:
- to end unemployment
- to avert imminent unemployment or
- to catch up on a lack of professional qualifications.
Who is entitled to the education voucher?
Unemployed and disadvantaged people in the labor market in Germany are entitled to the education voucher. This includes people who:

- Unemployment benefit II (Hartz IV),

The need for upskilling or reskilling for the unemployed or job-seeker is recognized when the additional or complementary professional qualifications lead to enhanced skills and improved employment opportunities. Such qualifications must be tailored to the needs of the labor market. Incidentally, employees can also receive an education voucher if they would like to continue their education within the framework of an existing employment relationship.
What costs are covered?
The employment agency covers all costs associated with further training, including course costs, learning materials, work clothes and examination fees. Travel expenses are also covered, both when using public transport and when using a private car. This includes journeys between your place of residence and the educational institution as well as the journey home to your family or a relative. If you use public transport, you should buy monthly tickets. A maximum of 130 euros can be credited for journeys without public transport.
Attention: When it comes to reimbursement of travel expenses, other conditions apply to job center customers. Check your entitlements in advance to get the maximum benefit.
If necessary, the employment agency will also cover the costs for external accommodation if the travel time is more than two and a half hours.
