Definition of “lateral entrant”

Today's career path is much more than just a straight line. Thanks to the dynamics of the world of work, professionals can flexibly adapt their careers to the needs of the market and their personal interests. The first training qualification is no longer the sole guide for your entire career. In fact, numerous exciting opportunities open up along the way to advance into new professional areas. This professional realignment, often referred to as lateral entry, means that someone leaves their original professional field and starts anew in a completely different area. Such career changers, who venture into a new industry without extensive prior knowledge, find their opportunity in certain professions, the so-called career changer jobs. Nevertheless, it is important to know that certain basic knowledge and qualifications are often required in order to be successful when applying and starting your career. If this knowledge has not already been acquired through initial training, it can be acquired through targeted further training or retraining. It is highly advisable to take advantage of these educational routes as they provide the necessary professional skills and thus improve the prospects of a successful job search.

meaningful work

The way work is valued has changed significantly in recent years. Good salary prospects are still an important factor when choosing a career, but interest is increasingly directed towards the self-realization. The Desire for meaningful, effective and valuable work is becoming increasingly important to many.

People long to find meaning in what they do. Creating good things, enabling positive changes and bringing benefits to society are important and motivating criteria in career orientation. The question of finding a meaningful job does not only arise for young people (Generation Y and Z) who are about to start their first career, because even people with work experience are beginning to reflect on their professional situation for various reasons. Age is irrelevant here, because a new professional start is possible at any stage of life. Even persons registered as unemployedwho want to reintegrate into the labor market often take a so-called job rating to get an overview of the prospects and meaningfulness of a career.

job rating

“Does my work contribute to something meaningful?” Ultimately, only you can answer this question yourself. While each job can have its own meaning, what is most important is that it pleases you personally and contributes to your happiness. Your own values and instincts are often the most reliable guides. Finally, it is important that you feel comfortable and fulfilled in what you may be doing for years to come.

It's up to you to decide what type of work makes sense for you. Are you looking for professional challenges, do you want to work on technological innovations, have a social impact or advocate for sustainability? Is a high income important to you or do you value diversity in your everyday working life? As you can see, there are many aspects that come into play when evaluating and selecting a job

Overview - Characteristics for attractive occupations

Lateral entry without retraining/training

As already mentioned, it is quite possible to find a job in a new professional field as an unskilled career changer. By presenting yourself to your employer as a willing and reliable worker, you can, over time, acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the job. However, this professional experience is not a substitute for a professional qualification, which serves as state-recognized proof of qualification. The lack of such a qualification can be a stumbling block in your own career path, for example if you are aiming for professional advancement or a change of company. Completed training is a requirement in most job advertisements. However, there are various ways in which those with industry experience can gain qualifications without vocational training or retraining. We would like to introduce them to you below.

external audit

The so-called external audit represents an attractive opportunity to qualify for the desired profession as an unskilled worker. This is an offer from the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the Chambers of Agriculture (LK). This offers those with practical experience the opportunity to take part in final and journeyman examinations for officially recognized training occupations and in this way to acquire a recognized vocational qualification. In order to be admitted as an external person for the final or journeyman's examination, however, certain requirements must be met. For example, you must be able to show that you have had a reasonable period of experience in the profession in which you intend to take your exam. The time frame should be about one and a half times the prescribed training period. Thus, if the training for the respective profession lasts three years, your own professional experience should include at least four and a half years. You must also provide credible evidence that you have professional knowledge. This can be proven by a work reference. Admittedly, the admission is a fundamental individual decision of the competent chamber.

Further developments

An application for retraining is not always approved. According to § 81 SGB III the promotion of retraining is a discretionary benefit. Applicants can therefore not make a legal claim to funding. Especially if you want to start retraining on your own initiative, it may be that you do not meet the necessary requirements to receive funding. As a rule, it is also not possible to finance the costs during retraining from your own funds. For this reason, however, you should not for a long time give up your opportunity for a career change! There are various opportunities for vocational training that will open up new prospects for you on the job market.

For example, you can try your luck with another payer. Under certain circumstances, choosing another retraining occupation could also help to get an application for funding approved. If these measures do not work, you may want to consider a different educational path. You can acquire various additional qualifications as part of further training and (promotion) training. Through the specially acquired specialist knowledge, you can, for example, qualify for a different area of application and thus for a new working environment.
